The story

My grandmother never called it skincare.

She called it butter, and she made it in the yard in Tamale on a Saturday. Nuts roasted until the smell filled the compound, kernels pounded, paste worked by hand in a calabash of cold water until it turned pale and light. I was small enough to be in the way, so my job was to fetch water and watch. I watched for years.

What she made was better than most of what I later saw sold in glass. The gap was never the butter. It was everything around the butter, the consistency, the packaging, the proof, the reason a stranger in London or Lagos should believe a jar from northern Ghana is worth what it is worth.

So Banini is not an attempt to invent something. It is her method, held to a standard that travels. We whip in small batches, we test with real people before we sell, and we say plainly where the nuts come from. I want a Ghanaian shea butter that can sit on the same shelf as L'Occitane without pretending, even slightly, to be from anywhere else.

The jar

Four things in, nothing else.

Every jar is whipped, never melted and poured. Melting collapses the crystal structure and gives you the greasy film most people think shea has to leave. Whipping keeps it light, so it sinks in and stays put.

We whip to order in limited runs. If a batch is not right, it does not leave Tamale.

31 testers used the jar for 24 hours before we priced anything. Their answers set the formula and the size.

Two questions decide this category. Does it come from where it says it comes from, and does it feel worth the money. Most shea sits low on one axis or the other. We are building for the corner where both hold.

    Whipped in Tamale from nuts we can trace to the women who gathered them, finished to a standard that holds its own in any beauty hall. Ghanaian on the label and in the jar.

  • Naya by Africa

    Our closest local rival and proof the demand is real. Strongly African in its story, though the finish and the price still read closer to everyday care than to luxury.

  • L'Occitane

    The global benchmark for what shea can command. It buys Burkinabé butter, then sells it as French. That gap is the opening we walk through.

  • Market-stall raw butter

    The most honest shea in Ghana and the least consistent. Beautiful ingredient, no packaging, no testing, no reason for anyone abroad to trust it.

  • Supermarket own-brand

    Shea listed fourth on an ingredient panel, cut with water and filler. Cheap, widely stocked, and forgettable.
